</p><p>(Eventbrite have recently changed there terms so we can&#x27;t have more than 25 tickets: apologies for any confusion!)</p><h2></h2><h2>Dr. Anna Xambo</h2><h3>Sensing the Forest: In the search for epistemological cross-pollination between forest research, HCI and SMC</h3><p>The combination of music and HCI is interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary, which helps to understand complex data and problems mediated by technologies via artistic, acoustic, audiovisual and human-centred research methods. </p><p>This talk will discuss the potential of combining scientific research methods with techno-artistic research methods from HCI and sound and music computing (SMC) to explore how this interdisciplinary approach can help raise awareness of the global climate change crisis focusing on forests. A starting point for this exploration is the recently awarded UKRI Arts and Humanities Research Council-funded project Sensing the Forest (<a href="https://sensingtheforest.github.io" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">sensingtheforest.github.io</a>) and the design of natural, sound-based interventions in forest ecosystems to help both understand and raise awareness on forest environmental data and how they relate to climate change.  </p><p></p><h2>Dr Chris Nash</h2><h3>Beyond NIME: Music Programming for the Masses</h3><p>What happens after NIME? Chris Nash presents a retrospective of the first 10 years of the Manhattan project (<a href="http://nash.audio/manhattan" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">http://nash.audio/manhattan</a>), from publication to public release, and his wider research to integrate programming and procedural music into mainstream computer music practice.</p><p>Manhattan is a hybrid music editor and programming language, a pattern-based sequencer/DAW that uses a ‘spreadsheet formula’ paradigm to embed code to live generate and manipulate musical events within the cells of the playing pattern. Designed to support scalable creative applications and learning, it is used in education (e.g. to teach computational thinking and coding through music) and wider creative practice, including applications of procedural music in major installations, live performances, and video games. </p><p>The talk will discuss specific design choices, language semantics, and usability challenges in widening engagement in music programming - lowering the threshold, not the ceiling - and demonstrate both novel pedagogical approaches and the expressive scope afforded by Manhattan’s synthesis of pattern and process, including examples of music programming “études”, where music is recomposed as code. The talk will reflect on the evolution and future of the project, including the opportunities and challenges of venturing outside the traditional scope of academia - developing and supporting end-user software; sustainably managing projects beyond proof-of-concept; and engaging with real-world interactions, users, and imperatives. The session will close with previews of new projects emerging from Manhattan: Klang (a C++ dialect for audio processing) and rapIDE (an IDE for live C++ audio programming... inside a DAW plugin), likewise aimed at improving the usability (and liveness) of audio programming.</p><p></p><h2>The CHIME Network</h2><p>The CHIME network (Computer Human Interaction and Music nEtwork) is an EPSRC-funded research network in Music and Human Computer Interaction which launched in April 2022.</p><p><a href="https://chime.ac.uk" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">c﻿hime.ac.uk</a></p>
